When Is Whole Life Insurance the Right Choice?
"Life insurance is a crucial part of a financial plan", says Gregory Karp, a noted financial journalist with the Chicago Tribune. His article "A Premium Consideration" points out that with rates near historic lows, there has never been a better time to review end of life financial plans. The decision of when and how much life insurance to purchase can be a difficult one. Though each person must decide for themselves what type of coverage is best, there are times that a whole life insurance policy may be the best choice. Here is a look at some scenarios when a person should consider the purchase of a whole life policy.
Estate Taxes
When a person with a large estate dies, there may be significant taxes on the estate. Those with a large estate may want to use a life insurance benefit to help those who will inherit the estate to pay the estate taxes. While a person may not have a lot of annual income or cash savings, a person who is a business owner, farmer, or who owns large land or property holdings may well have an estate that will trigger a significant estate tax. A whole life policy is one way to plan for the costs of the estate tax. Upon death, the beneficiary of the policy will receive the death benefit and can then use the money to pay the estate tax.
Large Amounts of Debt
A person who has a large amount of debt tied to family assets should consider buying coverage as a way to pay off the debt when the assets are passed to the next generation through inheritance. For example, a person who dies with a large amount of mortgage debt on a family home will cause a financial hardship for his or her beneficiaries as they will have to pay the debt or lose the home. By having a whole policy in place, a person can make certain that the heirs will have the financial means to pay the debt and inherit the home or other asset.
Retirement Planning
While the federal tax code provides numerous ways for a person to save for retirement in a tax advantaged account, those with high incomes are often not allowed to utilize these accounts. One way for high income earners to save for retirement in a tax advantaged manner is through the use of investments inside of a whole life insurance policy. Though not all whole life offer this investment feature, it is a common offering with most policies.
Medical Problems
Though no one can be sure of what the future will hold, those with a family medical history might want to consider obtaining life insurance before problems begin. Insurance companies may not offer insurance to those in poor health or only offer it at a high cost. By purchasing a whole life insurance policy before the onset of medical problems a person can be certain to obtain life insurance coverage while it is still an option.
Peace of Mind
For some insurance buyers, just knowing that a policy is in force and that a person's beneficiaries will receive a payout from an insurance policy provides a lot of peace of mind. For those buyers, a whole life insurance policy is the best choice. A whole life insurance policy will provide a lifetime of protection unlike a term life insurance policy that will expire after a period of time.

Finding cheap term life insurance can be a slippery slope. With the cost of health care and health insurance steadily increasing, life insurance companies are aware that we are not getting as many annual exams or participating in preventative care as much as we used to. Therefore, the companies need to select the best candidates so that they don’t lose their shirts, while still remaining competitive. If you are searching for cheap term life insurance, here are a few things that will help you find the best deals, at the most affordable costs.
Be a Savvy Shopper
Although medical costs are going up and preventative care is slightly down, people are living longer now than they did decades ago. We can thank diligent doctors and researchers for this, as modern medicine is sustaining life in an impressive way. If you happen to be in the age range of 30 to 50, the advice to shop before you settle is extremely applicable and you are among the group that life insurance companies thrive on. Therefore, some of the best rates are available for you and researching many companies is important if you want to get the best rates.
Life insurance companies exist because they hire people to know and predict life spans. The younger you purchase life insurance, the better a candidate you are for these companies because it means you probably will be paying their premiums longer, and sadly enough, the chance that you will pass away after the policy expires is greater. The latter is a dismal thought, but it is how term life insurance companies think and how they can remain profitable.
Buy Early Instead of Waiting
Even though early purchasing of cheap term life insurance means better odds for the insurance company, as a consumer you need to move forward on the premise that tomorrow is not guaranteed. Thorough research is important so don’t delay in choosing one and certainly don’t wait to start researching your options.
If you have a family member that is dependent on you, getting life insurance is a must. Not doing so can mean placing a lot of burden on living family members and it should be a priority especially if your family lives check to check and can’t afford burial services once you do pass away. The average cost of burying a family member today is about $15,000 minimum and few have that kind of cash sitting around at their disposal. It’s your responsibility to prepare and plan for your passing so living family members can mourn without added stress.
Think like an Agent
When shopping for Cheap Term Life Insurance you must remember that you are dealing with smart and critical agents, many of whom will scour every aspect of your life and habits in order to determine if you are a high risk or not. Some of the main points of contention when an agent decides to insure an individual are things like current health conditions, pre-existing conditions you may have and how you take care of yourself daily.
Those who are overweight, have existing medical conditions, are smokers or who have risky hobbies such as driving a motorcycle or love to go mountain climbing are all considered high risk. Insurance companies want you to live as long as possible and are less apt to insure high risk individuals.
Making some healthy and positive lifestyle changes now will better your chances of finding cheap term life insurance. This includes eating better, ditching your bike or quitting smoking. If you don’t, you probably will still find a company willing to insure you but your premiums will most definitely be higher.
By the way, don’t even consider lying on applications or during a scheduled medical exam if it is required by the company. Again, term life insurance agents are wise beyond their years and most policies have contingencies that if post death autopsies show that you died from lung cancer as a result of smoking two packs a day for 40 years, the insurance company will do all they can to make your policy null and void and your family members will get nothing. They have very good lawyers that will poke and prod every aspect of your life and try to find loopholes if they can be found. It’s always best to be as honest as possible with the insurance company rather than trying to lie about health conditions, hobbies and bad habits.
Along with researching the companies also be privy to what is expected of you before you are approved. Some term life insurance companies require full physicals, while others claim that they won’t ask you any health related questions and no exam is needed. Read the fine print for the companies that don’t require you to submit any medical history. Not that they are all scams, but many have contingencies and higher premiums because by not divulging your medical history they automatically consider you high risk and disqualify you from getting cheap term life insurance.

One of the prominent attractions of Term insurance policies, apart from its protecting you from financial risks and uncertainties, is its ability to provide tax breaks on premium paid as well as on maturity benefit. While you secure the future of your family and loved ones, you also stand to gain when it comes to tax. Whether it is online term insurance or the regular term insurance that you have secured, tax is a major consideration. And it would help to know about tax implications in terms of premiums paid and with regard to maturity benefit before you get term insurance.
What is maturity benefit?Maturity benefit depends much on the kind of term insurance that you purchase. For instance, if you choose term plans when you get term insurance, you may not be eligible for any maturity benefit at all. It is a similar case with whole term plans as well, since whole term plans are all about insuring your life and does not provide any survival. You need to get term insurance that provides you with survival benefits, as in the case of unit linked plans, money back plans and child plans where there are fixed sums assured to be paid back at the end of agreed terms.Tax considerations when you get term insurance:
There are two aspects of tax that you should worry about, which are equally applicable to online life insurance as well as to life insurance that you buy through other avenues. You could claim tax benefits on premiums that you pay on your life insurance, as well as on the sum that you receive at the end of the term of insurance, which is typically known as benefit. The two provisions applicable are Section 80C and Section 10(10D) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. While section 80C applies to tax implications associated with life insurance premiums, section 10(10D) applies to tax.
Tax on maturity benefit:It may be the commonly prevalent opinion that benefit is completely tax free when you get life insurance. However, Section 10(10D) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, states that holders of life insurance would be eligible for tax benefits as long as the premium paid during a financial year is limited to 20 percent of the sum assured. It is a similar case with Section 80C as well, where you could claim tax benefits as long as the premium payable for the financial year is within the 20% limit of the sum assured.Maturity benefit when premium is skipped:This is one common question that arises when you get life insurance: if premium is skipped once and is combined together to be payable the next year, the insurance premium paid would exceed the 20% limit of sum assured. Would benefit still be tax free or would benefit on life insurance be taxable then?
To be sure, Section 10(10D) specifies that benefit would not be taxable as long as the premium payable during any financial year is less than 20 percent of the sum assured. It implies that it is not the premium paid but the premium payable that matters. Paying two premiums together in a year does not account to an increase in premium payable. Hence, if the sum assured is Rs 100,000 and if the premium payable at any point in time is less than Rs 20,000, maturity benefit on life insurance would be exempt from tax.
